D. plans to harness the Tesseract to develop weapons as a deterrent against hostile extraterrestrials. As the group argues, Barton and Lokis other possessed agents attack the Helicarrier, disabling one of its engines in flight and causing Banner to transform into the Hulk. Stark and Rogers work to restart the damaged engine, and Thor attempts to stop the Hulks rampage. Romanoff fights Barton, and knocks him unconscious, breaking Lokis mind control. Loki escapes after killing Coulson and ejecting Thor from the airship, while the Hulk falls to the ground after attacking a S. H. I. E. L. D. fighter jet. Stark and Rogers realize that for Loki, simply defeating them will not be enough he needs to overpower them publicly to validate himself as ruler of Earth. Loki uses the Tesseract, in conjunction with a device Selvig built, to open a wormhole above Stark Tower to the Chitauri fleet in space, launching his invasion. Rogers, Stark, Romanoff, Barton, and Thor rally in defense of New York City, the wormholes location. Banner arrives and transforms into the Hulk, and together the Avengers battle the Chitauri while evacuating civilians. The Hulk finds Loki and beats him into submission. Romanoff makes her way to the wormhole generator, where Selvig, freed from Lokis mind control, reveals that Lokis scepter can be used to shut down the generator. Meanwhile, Furys superiors from the World Security Council attempt to end the invasion by launching a nuclear missile at Midtown Manhattan. Stark intercepts the missile and takes it through the wormhole toward the Chitauri fleet. The missile detonates, destroying the Chitauri mothership and disabling their forces on Earth. Starks suit runs out of power, and he falls back through the wormhole just as Romanoff closes it. Stark goes into freefall, but the Hulk saves him from crashing into the ground. D. agents who confiscated Professor Erik Selvig and Jane Fosters research on wormholes as it appeared they were learning too much and had become a risk. Sitwell was the head of the laboratory studying the hammer when Thor attacked and attempted to retrieve Mjlnir and warned Coulson of the breach. As Thor continued to fight his way through the protected base against the S. H. I. E. L. D. agents, Sitwell warned Coulson and allowed him to call Clint Barton for assistance in the fight. When Thor was finally apprehended after failing to reclaim Mjlnir as planned, Sitwell oversaw Coulsons interrogation as he attempted to learn who he was working for and where he had received his training. Sitwell called Coulson out of the interrogation briefly, at which point Thor was visited by Loki. When Coulson returned to the room to continue the questioning, Sitwell informed him that Erik Selvig had arrived to try and free him from their custody. Sitwell witnesses the Destroyers arrival. When another wormhole opened in the desert, Sitwell, Coulson and other S. H. I. E. L. D. investigated and witnessed the arrival of the Destroyer. Seeing the giant mechanical monster, Sitwell asked Coulson if the robot was something of Tony Starks design, but Coulson said that Stark never tells him anything. Sitwell tries to regain control of the Helicarrier. While Loki was held captive onboard the Helicarrier and interrogated by Fury and Black Widow, Sitwell remained onboard the Helicarrier. During Hawkeyes Attack on the Helicarrier, Sitwells computer abilities came in handy in regaining control of the Helicarrier despite the heavy damages it had sustained. While Fury and Maria Hill fought against the attacking force, Sitwell attempted to regain control of the ship when Barton damaged it through a hacking arrow, eventually succeeding and saving the day. Pollack knocked on his door to ask him to lower the volume, but Sitwell easily subdued him and tied him up. Pollack managed to warn Wise, who attacked Sitwell with the alien gun. During the subsequent fight, the gun was knocked loose and shot automatically, destroying most of the room, and all of the stolen money.
